LEH, September 24:

Almost a year on , the administration of Ladakh has announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 15 lakh each to the kin of four people, who were killed in police firing during Leh violence on September 24 last year.

“In our continued commitment to support the families, affected by the tragic violence in Ladakh on 24 September last year, today sanctioned a compensation of Rs 15 lakh to the next of kin of each of the four deceased,” said Ladakh LG VK Saxena in a post on X.

He also informed that an ex-gratia of Rs 3 lakh for those with major injuries and Rs 1 lakh for minor injuries has also been approved.

“Deeply grateful to Hon’ble Union Home Minister, Shri @AmitShah Ji for his sensitive, humanitarian and guiding approach, who has always stood in solidarity with the victims and their families. While no compensation amount can replace a life lost or erase the pain endured, the Ladakh Administration firmly stands beside every affected family in their journey towards healing and overcoming the grief,” he added.

A retired soldier of the Ladakh Scouts was among the four dead. Over 80 people were injured and over 85 were arrested by the police following the violence. The people were protesting over statehood with legislature and constitutional safeguards under sixth schedule of the Indian Constitution.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has agreed upon a duly elected government and safeguards under Article 371 K.
