Terrorist arrested after 35 years in 1991 bomb blast case

JAMMU, August 13

The Railway police, on Thursday, arrested a terrorist, who had been evading arrest for 35 years in a bomb blast case at Jammu railway station that killed three people and left 18 injured.

“Railway (GRP) Police Jammu arrested an absconding terrorist booked under Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act. He has been identified as Altaf Hussain Sheikh, son of Nazir Ahmed Sheikh, resident of Marhama-Bijbehara, Anantnag. He has been arrested after a long chase of 35 years,” said an official.

He informed that the terrorist initially went underground and then was living with concealed identity for several decades.

The accused along with other accomplices was involved in a case of bomb blast on April 2, 1991 at platform number 1, railway station Jammu killing three persons including two from paramilitary and injuring 18 civilians. An FIR number 07/1991 under sections 307, 302, 120(B) RPC, 3/4 TADA, 4/5 ESA was registered at Police Station GRP Jammu.

During the investigation one accused Aman Ullah Khan was arrested, while three other accused persons escaped and could not be arrested at that time and were declared absconders by the concerned court.

In the last two years GRP Jammu launched an intensive manhunt and identified the accused Altaf Hussain Sheikh, verified his identity by minutely going into details of his identity and residential particulars and discovered him living under a concealed identity who had established himself as a successful businessman in the Bijbehara area.

Long-pursuit of the police team brought results and the accused responsible for the death of innocent persons was arrested and produced before the TADA Court on 13th August 2026 for further legal proceedings.
