Centre mulls Natl Sanjeevani Research Centre for sea buckthorn in Ladakh’s Nubra

The union agriculture ministry has constituted to a high level panel to examine a dedicated National Sanjeevani Research Centre at Nubra in the union territory of Ladakh for research, development, value addition and commercialization of the high-value organic and medicinal Himalayan crop, Sea Buckthorn.
The information has been shared by the Ladakh’s lieutenant governor VK Saxena on X.
“Glad to share that on our request, the Union Agriculture Ministry has constituted a High-Level Committee to examine setting up of a dedicated National Sanjeevani Research Centre at Nubra in Ladakh, for research, development, value addition and commercialization of the high-value organic and medicinal Himalayan crop, Sea Buckthorn”.

ji for recognizing the immense medicinal and nutritional potential of Ladakh’s Sea Buckthorn, rightfully calling it our ‘Sanjeevani’. Sea Buckthorn is a naturally occurring Himalayan plant with high nutritional values. It is a rich source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and contains all four omega fatty acids—Omega-3, Omega-6, Omega-9, and the rare Omega-7. It has a significantly high commercial and agriculture potential,” added Saxena.
The LG also thanked union agriculture minister for evoking keen interest in sea buckthorn

ji for his prompt action and directing to set up the committee in just a week, since my request to him on 14 August,” he said.
The committee arrived in Ladakh yesterday and will be meeting the farmers, cooperatives and officials in Nubra today. The committee will submit its report in 45 days, he said.
The committee will review the existing status of sea buckthorn, natural distribution, cultivation, production, utilisation and ongoing research in Ladakh, besides exploring ways of genetic improvement, propagation, standardised cultivation, harvesting, post-harvest management, processing and quality assurance.
“This crucial step will transform our unique Himalayan resource through systematic research, value addition, and sustainable commercialization, by unlocking new avenues of scientific innovation and livelihood opportunities for our hardworking farmers and local communities,” said Saxena.
