ULC issues another terror letter to Pandits, former DGP suggests fire arms for vulnerable employees

Another threat letter to Pandit employees working in Kashmir has set alarm bells ringing in the security establishment with former DGP Dr SP Vaid suggesting that they be given firearms and training to handle the small arms.

The United Liberation Council, an offshoot of LeT has issued second threat letter within weeks mentioning names of some of the Pandit employees, their vehicle numbers and residential addresses.

“The letter, second in weeks, has certainly created panic among Pandit community..we have over 5500 Pandit children working in Valley. We have seen enough of violence and attacks,” said Surinder Ticku.

He urged the LG’s administration to cleanse the system, provide foolproof security to the Pandit employees and secured housing colonies for their safety and security.

Former DGP Dr SP Vaid has asserted that the KP employees be provided arms training and equipped with small firearms to protect themselves.

He has put out a post on X justifying his demand.

“This latest threat to Kashmiri Pandits must not be taken lightly.The fact that the threat letter contains names, addresses, vehicle numbers and mobile numbers suggests that someone with access to sensitive information may be involved. The source must be identified and booked under law. If the threat is emanating from outside India, the perpetrators must understand the consequences. As Israel demonstrated after 7 October 2023, those who threaten its citizens are not allowed to feel safe anywhere in the world,” he said.

“At the same time, Kashmiri Pandits must be given proper threat-awareness, do’s and don’ts, and basic tactical training. Wherever legally feasible, those facing credible threats should be considered for licensed small arms and trained in their safe and effective use. The ability to defend themselves can itself serve as a deterrent,* he added

“Wherever possible, vulnerable employees should also be posted to secure government premises such as Deputy Commissioners’ offices, the Secretariat and protected Directorates, rather than leaving them exposed as soft targets,” he stated.

“The J&K administration needs a high-level security action plan, led by the Chief Secretary, DGP, ADG CID and other security chiefs, specifically to protect Kashmiri Pandits. This threat must be taken seriously. Prevention is better than mourning another tragedy”, he concluded.
