Railways to re-engage retired employees in Jammu Division

Jammu: May 11: Following the establishment of the Jammu Division in 2025, a decision has been taken to re-engage retired railway employees across various posts within key railway departments—specifically operating, commercial, personnel, and general administration.
This initiative aims to address the shortage of railway staff, ensure the smooth functioning of divisional operations, and fulfill work-related requirements. This decision has been taken in accordance with the directives issued by the Railway Board.
Key terms and conditions regarding eligibility criteria and age limits stipulate that, as of the application deadline, a candidate’s maximum age must not exceed 64 years and 6 months. Re-engagement shall remain valid only until the employee attains the age of 65 years.
Retired employees belonging to the same cadre or category are eligible to apply. Candidates who retired from the same Pay Level will be accorded priority over those who retired from higher Pay Levels.
The selection process will not involve any written examination. Selection will be conducted by a designated committee based on the candidates’ Annual Performance Appraisal Report (APAR) grading for the preceding 5 years (with a minimum requirement of ‘Good’ grading), relevant work experience, and Vigilance clearance.
Regarding the department-wise breakdown of this re-engagement drive: 12 employees will be re-engaged in the Operating Department, approximately 48 in the Commercial Department, and approximately 20 in the Personnel and General Administration Departments. In total, 80 retired employees will be re-engaged. Appreciating this initiative, Mr. Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu, stated, “The years of experience possessed by retired railway employees, along with their dedication to their work, will prove to be a milestone in the smooth functioning of the Jammu Division. Under the new divisional structure, a decision has been taken to re-engage experienced personnel in order to enhance the effectiveness of services and further improve passenger amenities. This will not only boost operational efficiency but also provide retired employees with a golden opportunity to once again dedicate their services in the national interest.”

  • World’s highest rail arch bridge can give impetus to tourism in J&K

World’s highest rail arch bridge can give impetus to tourism in J&K

    Jammu
With two engineering marvels—world’s highest rail arch bridge over Chenab river and India’s first cable stayed rail bridge over Anji river in J&K, the Northern Railways can give an impetus to tourism by announcing halt of Vande Bharat trains on the arch bridge.
“The arch bridge keeps attracting huge tourists. We would love to see the Vande Bharat trains halted on it for say, 3 to 5 minutes so that the tourists can capture the scenic beauty,” said Rakesh Kumar, a tourist from Ludhiana.
Kumar further said that direct train to Kashmir has become the most preferred mode to transport for the tourists.
“The arch bridge is well secured and protected 24×7. The decision to stop the train for 3 to five minutes will certainly help the tourists to enjoy the scenic beauty comprising hills, Chenab beneath and a skyline across the horizon,” said Kumar’s wife Pooja.
Like the couple there were several other tourists who also recommended that the Vande Bharat trains can be stopped for a few minutes.
“Our PM Narendra Modi ji walked on the deck of the bridge and described it a symbol of India’s strength and conviction. The Railways can go a step further and announced brief halt on the bridge. It can be done on weekdays, if not regularly,” said Upendra Dixit from Pune.
Meanwhile, in view of the anticipated heavy influx of tourists and the palpable excitement expected during the upcoming summer holidays in the Kashmir Valley (under the jurisdiction of the Jammu Division), the Jammu Division has launched special ‘Tourist Welcome and Facilitation Counters’ at Srinagar Railway Station. The objective of this visionary initiative is to provide high-quality amenities and guidance to every tourist setting foot in the Valley.
With the establishment of these facilitation centers, passengers arriving in Srinagar will now have access to all essential tourism-related information—right within the station premises—under a single roof.
It is often observed that first-time visitors to Kashmir face difficulties in obtaining information regarding local travel and sightseeing destinations. This initiative aims to bridge that gap. Trained personnel stationed here will provide prompt information to passengers regarding local tourist spots, transportation options, and other essential services. A confluence of Revenue and Service: This project is not limited merely to providing service; it will also serve as a robust avenue for the Railway to generate ‘Non-Fare Revenue.’ This model demonstrates how the Railway can simultaneously strengthen its economic resources while expanding passenger amenities. A Commitment to a Superior Travel Experience: Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of the Jammu Division, stated, “Our goal is not merely to transport passengers to their destination, but to make their entire journey a memorable one. These counters, launched at Srinagar Station, will instill a sense of safety and comfort in the minds of tourists, thereby giving a significant boost to Kashmir tourism.” Through these counters, the Railway administration will provide tourists with comprehensive information regarding Kashmir’s various tourist attractions.

Terrorism, exodus of Hindus & usurping of their land behind 63 year old Jamwal’s failed assassination bid on Farooq Abdullah

    JAMMU:
Terrorism outbreak, exodus of Hindus & encroachment of their land in Kashmir were triggers for 63 year old Kamal Singh Jamwal to attempt assassination bid on NC president and former chief minister Farooq Abdullah.
The NC leader has survived the bid on his life at Royal Park, Greater Kailash, on March 11 while he was leaving the venue.
A special investigation team (SIT) of Jammu and Kashmir Police has filed 600 page charge-sheet in the case before the court of the chief judicial magistrate (CJM), Jammu on May 8.
The accused held former chief minister Farooq Abdullah responsible for terrorism in Kashmir, mass exodus of Hindus from valley and encroachment of their land by the Islamic radicals, said an official, privy to the drafting of the charge-sheet.

“He strongly felt that terrorism broke out under then chief minister Farooq Abdullah in 1989, who did nothing to contain it and as a result Hindus were hounded out of Kashmir and their land usurped,” he added.
Charge-sheet further stated that the accused harboured bad-blood for over two decades and was looking for an opportunity to eliminate Abdullah.

The firing incident occurred in the Greater Kailash area on March 11 as Abdullah and deputy CM Surinder Choudhary were leaving a marriage function. CCTV cameras caught the incident. Footage showed the gunman approaching Abdullah from behind and firing a shot at him with his licenced pistol from very close range. Security, however, thwarted the attempt and took the accused – identified as 63-year-old Kamal Singh Jamyal – into custody. A case under Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and section 3/25 of the Arms Act was registered at Gangyal police station.
Jammu inspector general BS Tuti formed the seven-member SIT on March 14, under the then deputy inspector general (DIG), Jammu, Samba Kathua range Shiv Kumar Sharma, who is currently posted as DIG of the Udhampur-Reasi range.

One year post-Op Sindoor, survivors try to pick up threads of life

    JAMMU:
Pakistan’s intense shelling on Poonch city during India’s Operation Sindoor has not only left behind a trail of death and destruction but also deep scars on the psyche of survivors
“We lost our only son Vihaan Bhargav. He was just 13. Our world has been turned upside down and our lives have never been the same again,” says, Sanjeev Kumar Bhargav, a government teacher.
Vihaan lost his life after a Pakistani mortar shell hit their car in Bhainch.
The shell hit the little boy on his head. The sight of his scalp hanging and blood oozing out of his head was heart wrenching.
“No medals, memorial plaques or words of sympathies can heal our wounds.,” he says and refuses to speak further
Ajay Maini, Sanjeev’s colleague and friend, says, Sanjeev and his wife have gone into depression since death of their only son.
“They barely eat. Though Sanjeev tends to his duties at the government school, he has lost interest in life,” adds Maini.
“Since we are colleagues, he keeps remembering Vihaan during our discussions and cries profusely. I fall short of words and find it difficult to console him because they have lost their only son, who was just 13 years old,” says Maini.
After braving Pak shelling during the intervening night of May 6 and 7, Bhargav and his family were fleeing Poonch town when their Maruti Swift car was hit by Pak artillery fire at Bhainch on NH144-A.
Maini says, “Poonch has always bore the brunt of Indo-Pak hostilities , “around 1.15 AM on Wednesday we woke up to loud explosions. I went upstairs on the roof and saw mortars being fired at the town. I huddled my wife and two children to a room and prayed for our lives.”
Maini lived in Mohalla Sandigate in Poonch town.
Old people recall that never before Pakistan rained so many mortars on Poonch town, not even during 1971 war compared to what they did during Operation Sindoor.
World has moved on but Poonch town still mourn its dead that included tender buds like Vihaan, Zain and Zoya.
For the unversed, Poonch town is surrounded by Pakistan from Ajote, Digwar, Malti and Gulpur sectors where it sits on dominating positions.

  • Jammu,Srinagar to get direct Vande Bharat train, Vaishnaw to flag off today

Jammu,Srinagar to get direct Vande Bharat train, Vaishnaw to flag off today

Union Minister for Railways Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw will flag off the extended Srinagar-Katra Vande Bharat Express service from Jammu Tawi Railway Station tomorrow, i.e. on 30th April 2026. The train, which previously operated from Srinagar up to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, will now run all the way to Jammu Tawi, bringing the country’s most modern train directly to J&K’s largest city and railway hub.

Following the flag-off, the Union Minister will subsequently inspect two of the most remarkable engineering structures on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), the Anji Bridge and the Chenab Bridge.

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express on 6th June 2025, the train ran with 8 coaches. Since then, the train has consistently been running at full capacity, with an overwhelming response from passengers. The decision to augment the rake to 20 coaches is a direct response to that demand, more than doubling the train’s seating capacity at a stroke, and significantly easing the pressure on reservations and waitlists, particularly during peak pilgrimage and tourist seasons.

For pilgrims who have watched seats sell out days in advance, for tourists planning a trip to the Valley, and for locals who rely on this service for everyday travel, the expanded rake means the train is now far less likely to turn them away. With the extension to Jammu Tawi happening simultaneously, the 20-coach Vande Bharat arrives at its largest catchment city with the capacity to match it, a train finally built to the scale of the demand it has always inspired.

While tomorrow’s flag-off marks the inaugural run, the extended Jammu Tawi–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express will enter regular service from 2nd May 2026. Two pairs of services will operate across the corridor, covering a distance of around 266 km.

The first service (Train No. 26401) departs Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM, halts at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi, and Banihal, arriving at Srinagar at 11:10 AM, a journey of four hours and fifty minutes. Its return (Train No. 26402) leaves Srinagar at 2:00 PM and reaches Jammu Tawi by 6:50 PM. This pair runs six days a week, except Tuesday.

The second service (Train No. 26404) departs Srinagar at 8:00 AM, halts at Banihal and Katra, and arrives at Jammu Tawi by 12:40 PM. Its return (Train No. 26403) departs Jammu Tawi at 1:20 PM and reaches Srinagar by 6:00 PM. This pair runs six days a week, except Wednesday.

Together, the two pairs ensure that passengers have a morning and an afternoon Vande Bharat option from both ends of the corridor on most days of the week, giving travellers meaningful flexibility in planning their journeys.

Extending the Vande Bharat’s run from Katra all the way to Jammu Tawi is a straightforward but consequential change for ordinary travellers across the entire J&K region. Until now, pilgrims and passengers arriving at Jammu Tawi Railway Station, which is one of the busiest railheads in northern India, connecting trains from Delhi, Mumbai, and beyond had to change trains or arrange separate road transport to reach Katra. With the extension, they will be able to board the Vande Bharat directly at Jammu Tawi and reach the Vaishno Devi base camp at Katra, and travel onwards all the way to Srinagar, without a single interchange.

The same seamless journey works in the other direction too. A traveller boarding at Srinagar will now be able to reach Jammu Tawi in a single, unbroken ride, connecting directly to the national rail network.

The Pilgrim: A Blessed Journey Made Easier

For the millions of devotees who travel each year to seek the blessings of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, this extension removes a persistent inconvenience, the mandatory interchange at Katra. Until now, a pilgrim had to alight at Katra and board a separate Vande Bharat to continue onward, or vice versa. That break in journey is now eliminated. More significantly, for the growing number of pilgrims who combine the Vaishno Devi darshan at Katra with the Amarnath Yatra, whose base camps at Pahalgam and Baltal are accessed from Srinagar, the entire pilgrim circuit of J&K is now achievable on a single, unbroken rail journey, without a change of train, a second reservation, or the anxiety of a missed connection.

For the Indian and international tourist, this extension opens an entirely new way to experience Jammu & Kashmir. A visitor flying into Jammu can now board the Vande Bharat at Jammu Tawi and ride through some of the most breathtaking terrain on the subcontinent, past the Shivalik foothills, across the engineering marvel of the Chenab and Anji bridges, through tunnels carved into the Himalayan rock and arrive in Srinagar, ready to experience the Dal Lake, the Mughal Gardens, and the legendary hospitality of the Valley. No highway delays, no mountain road anxiety, no weather-dependent road closures.

The extension is expected to give a significant boost to tourism across the entire J&K corridor, making the region accessible to a far broader segment of travellers who may have been deterred by the logistics of the journey.

The Local Commuter: Years of Interchanges, Now Gone

For residents of Jammu, Katra, Reasi, and the Kashmir Valley, the extension addresses a long-standing inconvenience. A student from Srinagar travelling to Jammu for college, a government official commuting between the two capitals of J&K, a patient travelling to a hospital in Jammu, all of them previously had to break their journey at Katra and arrange onward transport. That interchange is now eliminated.

Crucially, this matters most in winter. When heavy snowfall blocks the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, sometimes for days at a stretch, the railway corridor becomes a lifeline. The Vande Bharat, designed to operate in temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius with heated windshields, advanced heating systems, and all-weather components, will provide a reliable, weather-proof link between the Valley and the rest of the country at precisely those moments when road travel becomes impossible or dangerous.

The Trader, the Artisan, the Businessperson: Commerce at High Speed

Kashmir’s economy runs on its crafts, the pashmina shawls, walnut wood carvings, hand-knotted carpets, and saffron that find buyers across India and the world. Artisans and traders from the Valley have long grappled with the cost and uncertainty of moving goods and themselves between Srinagar and Jammu. A faster, more reliable, and more affordable rail connection directly cuts the time and cost of doing business.

A Kashmiri artisan heading to a trade fair in Jammu, a fruit exporter from the Valley coordinating a consignment, a textile businessman from Jammu sourcing handicrafts in Srinagar, each of them will find the extended Vande Bharat service a meaningful improvement in the economics of their work. The connectivity also opens up possibilities for smaller traders and entrepreneurs who previously found the journey too cumbersome to make frequently.

Key intermediate stations on the route will also see enhanced connectivity, giving businesses and communities in these towns direct access to both Jammu and Srinagar without changing trains.

Anji and Chenab: Where Engineering Meets the Himalayas

During his visit, the Union Minister will inspect the Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge, rising 331 metres above the Anji River valley and anchored by 96 high-tensile cables. He will also inspect the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world’s highest railway arch bridge at 359 metres above the riverbed, taller than the Eiffel Tower. Both structures are the backbone of the USBRL, the 272-km project through the Himalayas that now makes this extended Vande Bharat service possible.

A Decade of Rail Transformation in J&K

The extension of the Vande Bharat to Jammu Tawi is the latest milestone in a decade-long effort to transform railway connectivity in Jammu & Kashmir. The Udhampur-Katra section was commissioned in 2014. The Kashmir Valley saw its first electric train in February 2024. A dedicated Jammu Railway Division was created in January 2025. Stations at Jammu Tawi, Katra, Udhampur, and Budgam are being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The USBRL, built at a total cost of ₹43,780 crore with 36 tunnels spanning 119 km and 943 bridges, is the connective tissue that makes all of it possible.

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first Vande Bharat on this corridor last year, it was a historic moment. Tomorrow’s extension to Jammu Tawi takes that history forward and brings its benefits to millions more.

Holy bone relics of Tathagata Buddha arrive in Leh, amid deep spiritual fervour

Leh, April 29: Amid deep spiritual fervour and an atmosphere imbued with devotion, the holy Piprahwa relics of Tathagatha Buddha arrived in Leh today, marking the commencement of a historic spiritual celebration in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The Lieutenant Governor of UT Ladakh, Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena, accorded a warm and reverential welcome to the sacred relics upon their arrival at the Technical Area, Leh Airport, from New Delhi, where the Holy Relics are originally preserved.

Traditional performances, ceremonial honours, and sacred rituals marked the reception ceremony. The relics, brought from Delhi by Drukpa Thuksey Rinpoche and Khenpo Thinlas Chosal of Matho Monastery in a special Air Force aircraft, were received by the Lieutenant Governor in the presence of prominent religious and public figures, including Khamtak Rinpoche, Rigyal Rinpoche, President Ladakh Gonpa Association Ven. Dorje Stanzin, President Ladakh Buddhist Association Chering Dorjey Lakruk, former Members of Parliament Thupstan Chewang and Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, former CEC LAHDC Leh Tashi Gyalson, and representatives of various social, religious and political organisations.

The Ladakh Police accorded a ceremonial guard of honour, while monks performed special prayers. The Lieutenant Governor offered khataks and prayers on behalf of the people of Ladakh, invoking peace and well-being for all.

Following the ceremonial reception, the relics were taken in a grand procession to Jivetsal, the designated venue for public exposition, beginning May 1, which marks the 2569th Buddha Purnima. The event witnessed overwhelming community participation from across Ladakh, reflecting unity, faith, and collective reverence, as thousands of devotees, dressed in traditional attire, lined the route up to Jivetsal to catch a glimpse of the sacred relics.

Describing the occasion as highly auspicious, Lieutenant Governor Shri Saxena stated that the arrival of the holy relics has blessed the entire region. He noted that while the relics have been exhibited internationally in the past, this is the first time they have been brought out of their original place of preservation for exposition within India. Shri Saxena expressed gratitude to the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for choosing Ladakh for this sacred event and highlighted the region’s deep-rooted connection with Buddhism and spirituality. He also urged people to participate in large numbers to seek the blessings of Lord Buddha.

Over the years, the sacred Piprahwa relics of Lord Buddha have been exhibited in several countries, including Thailand, Mongolia, Vietnam, Russia, Singapore, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar, drawing global attention and devotion. In Ladakh, the relics will be available for public veneration at Jivetsal from May 2 to May 10, followed by exposition in Zanskar on May 11 and 12, and thereafter at the Dharma Centre in Leh from May 13 to 14, before being flown back to Delhi on May 15.

The Hon’ble Minister of Home Affairs and Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, apart from union ministers, Ambassadors, Chief Ministers of Buddhist-majority states, and representatives of various Buddhist organisations, will be visiting Leh for the veneration.

The Piprahwa relics have gained renewed global significance in recent years. After 127 years in colonial possession, a significant collection of associated gems and offerings was repatriated to India in July 2025, from a British family and a private collection.

In anticipation of the influx of devotees and tourists, the Lieutenant Governor has been closely monitoring preparations and has directed extensive beautification and infrastructure measures across Leh. Plantation drives, placement of flower pots, and city-wide cleanliness initiatives have been undertaken in a mission mode to ensure a pleasant, aesthetic, and spiritually enriching experience for all visitors.

“India Does Not Forget”: Army Recalls Operation Mahadev, Vows Swift Retaliation on Pahalgam Attack Anniversary

    Srinagar, April 22, 2026:
Marking one year since the deadly Pahalgam terror attack that shook the nation, the Indian Army on Wednesday reiterated its uncompromising stance against terrorism, invoking Operation Mahadev and warning of an “assured response” to any future provocations.
The anniversary commemorates the April 22, 2025 attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baisaran Valley, where 26 civilians, mostly tourists, were brutally killed by heavily armed terrorists linked to Pakistan-based groups. The incident had triggered nationwide outrage and a decisive shift in India’s counter-terror strategy.
In a strong message, the Army asserted that “India does not forget,” underlining its continued vigilance and operational readiness. Officials highlighted Operation Mahadev—a meticulously coordinated 93-day manhunt that culminated in the elimination of the attackers in July 2025—as a symbol of justice delivered through persistence and precision.
The operation, involving advanced surveillance, drone tracking, and joint coordination between the Army, Jammu & Kashmir Police, and central agencies, successfully neutralised the terrorists identified as key perpetrators of the massacre.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the victims, reaffirming that their sacrifice would not be forgotten and stressing India’s unwavering commitment to eradicating terrorism. Across the political spectrum, leaders echoed similar sentiments, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh issuing a veiled warning to Pakistan, cautioning that any further misadventures would invite consequences.
Security forces have significantly strengthened their presence in the region over the past year, expanding surveillance networks and establishing new operational bases to prevent infiltration and ensure rapid response capabilities.
The anniversary serves not only as a solemn remembrance of lives lost but also as a stark reminder of the persistent threat of cross-border terrorism. With its firm messaging and demonstrated military resolve, India has made it clear that any attempt to destabilise peace will be met with swift and decisive action.
As the nation reflects on the tragedy, the message from its armed forces remains unequivocal: justice will be pursued relentlessly, and those who threaten India’s security will face the full force of its resolve.
