Ladakh LG’s ‘Him Sarovar’ project brims with glacier meltwater

LEH, September 16; An initiative by the Ladakh’s LG VK Saxena under project ‘Him Sarovar’ has started yielding desired results as four large ponds are brimming with glacier meltwater s.

Saxena shared the information on X.

“With immense delight and satisfaction, I share that all four large ponds, constructed under Project Him Sarovar at Spituk Farka in Leh, have now been filled with glacier meltwater, in a record time of just 5 months,” he wrote.

The works on construction of the four large ponds started on 10 April 2026, and concluded with recharge and operationalization of the 4th pond on 9th September.
 
● Pond No. 1 inaugurated on 21st June
● Pond No. 2 filled on 19th July
● Pond No. 3 filled on 24th August
● Pond No. 4 filled on 9th September
 
Each pond, measuring 60m × 40m × 2m, is designed to store approx. 60 lakh litres of glacier meltwater, thereby storing nearly 24 million litres of precious water, and preventing them from going waste and creating a new command area of nearly 1000 acres.
 
Importantly, these ponds are being directly replenished by glacier meltwater from the Stok glacier stream, whose seasonal flows were diverted into the Igoo-Phey Canal, feeding into these reservoirs.

This diversion ensures that huge volumes of water, earlier wasted, are now conserved for irrigation, ecological restoration, and long-term water security.
 
“This achievement reflects our Administration’s unwavering commitment to environmental resilience, agricultural revival, and sustainable water security in Ladakh’s cold desert,” said Saxena.
